Meeting your child   back to top

Please let us know if your child is to be picked up by someone other than the usual person at the end of the session.

Parents as helpers   back to top

We are aware of the importance of parental support in nursery. Do let us know if you are able to come and help or support special events.

Special needs   back to top

The number of adults present in the nursery enables us to provide individual attention for each child. Each child is able to progress at his/her own rate in all areas of development and this is true for children with or without disabilities or learning difficulties. We are experienced in working closely with professionals across the range of special needs. If you would like to discuss the group's abilities to meet your child's special needs, please talk to Barbara Hawkes, who is the Supervisor and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.(SENCO)

Teaching programme   back to top

All children are supported in developing their own potential at their own pace. By means of appropriate play activities we offer a curriculum, which leads to nationally approved learning outcomes and provides a solid foundation for children’s later learning.

Language and Literacy   back to top

Children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes. A well-stocked book corner gives every child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar with books, be able to handle them and be aware of their uses, both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures. Literacy work continues as children are taught letter names and sounds.

Maths   back to top

Children become familiar with the sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities, which form the basis for early mathematics. As they use their developing mathematical understanding to solve practical problems, children are assisted to learn and use the vocabulary of mathematics, identifying objects by shape, position, size, volume and number. Songs, games and picture books help children become aware of number sequences and when they are ready, to use simple mathematical operations such as adding.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World   back to top

Children learn to observe the features of objects and substances, recognising differences, patterns and similarities and to share and record their findings. Children are assisted in exploring and understanding their environment, both within the group and also in the wider community. A range of safe and well-maintained equipment enables children to extend their technological understanding using simple tools and techniques as appropriate to achieve their intentions and to solve problems.

Creativity   back to top

The children have many opportunities to express themselves through art, music and imaginative play. Art equipment, including paint, glue, crayons and pencils as well as natural and discarded resources, provide an open-ended exploration of colour, shape and texture and the development of skills in painting, drawing and collage.

Physical Development   back to top

The nursery is equipped with a range of games and vehicles for outside play, and even when the weather is bad we are able to use the sheltered area in the playground at Wescott School. We also have regular indoor PE. We ask that you provide a change of clothing for this activity. The children wear shorts T-shirts and PE shoes; these should be kept in nursery in a named drawstring bag. The children are encouraged to undress and dress themselves, sometimes items are put on back to front and unless this causes discomfort we will not correct it. This is an achievement for the child which we do not wish to undermine.

What to wear   back to top

In order to feel free to explore and experiment, it is best to send children dressed in easily washable clothes that are not too new. We promote a caring environment that encourages children towards independence. We would appreciate your support in encouraging your children to dress and undress for themselves. Do think about garments with easy fastenings. Please label all garments clearly with your child’s name.

Only stud earrings to be worn please as others can get caught up during play.
We do provide aprons for messy activities and spare clothes incase of accidents. Please remember to launder and return any of the nursery’s spare clothes as soon as possible.

Food   back to top

We provide a mid morning and mid afternoon snack. This will vary but will usually consist of a drink, (milk, hot chocolate, water, squash) a piece of fruit, grated cheese, some bread and butter or toast. We also provide foods that are topical - rice and noodles at Chinese New Year, pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, hot cross buns at Easter.

If your child is staying for lunch, please ensure that their lunchbox is labelled and is only as big as it needs to be (space in the refrigerator is limited) Please do not include sweets, chewing gum or peanuts or carbonated drinks.

Absence and health   back to top

Please could you ‘phone the nursery to let us know if your child will be absent whatever the reason.

Parents are asked not to return any child to nursery who has been vomiting or had diarrhoea until at least 48 hours has elapsed since the last attack.

Please report any contagious diseases for example chicken pox, conjunctivitis, impetigo, so that we may alert other parents.
